E3: Wukong Warrior hands on

Vir2L just doesn’t stop, because the best game they showed me was last, and that is The Legend of Wukong Warrior. It’s a side scrolling platformer that is an incredibly interesting new way to make the popular genre work on the iPhone.

Instead of using an onscreen D Pad to navigate through the world. Instead you move left to right by tilting your iPhone, and to jump you swipe your finger under your character. When you do this it will draw a cloud that your character will bounce on. Each created cloud can only be jumped on 3 times and then it will dissipate. Obviously, since it is a side scrolling platformer, the idea is move across the level from point A to point B, but worry not, because there are plenty of enemies along the way trying to stop you.

Combat in the game very interesting. When you encounter and enemy the game will stop for a second and show you where the enemy is vulnerable, you then tilt your phone towards him and swipe the weak area, if successful, you will attack and kill the enemy, if you fail, you will take damage.

The developer also told me that there will be a deep story  throughout the game’s 20 levels, which I wasn’t really able to see on the show floor, but if the quality of the rest of the game is any indication, I think the story will be engaging and entertaining.

To me, everything about this game feels new and fresh, from the nice inkwashed visuals, to the creative use of the iPhone features for controls. It feels like every aspect of the game was carefully thought out and planned to work on the iPhone, and only on the iPhone.
