Warpgate iPad Impressions

Warpgate is a game that has been heavily hyped up for an iPad release, because it has a scale and scope that would just not be possible on an iPhone or iPod touch. Since there is a lot to the game I haven’t seen enough of it to really write a full review yet, but I have played enough to some initial impressions. This way I can at least give you some idea how I am feel about it.

Let’s start with what Warpgate actually is, then get to how I feel about. It is a a space combat and exploration. It’s also has some elements of an RPG, and a dope wars-esqu, buy low sell high game mixed in for good measure. The RPG stuff really shows in the combat, because it’s kind of a turn-ish based battle system. The more I think about it, the more I realize how much of a mash up of different stuff this game really is. They pretty much grab bits and pieces from a whole bunch of different genres and throw it into a pretty complete package.

As I said before I have only spent a little time with the game, but what I have seen so far is pretty awesome. The game looks stunning on the the iPad, with the big high definition screen. You can zoom all the way in on your ship, or all the way out, and it looks good either way.

So far, playing the game is very enjoyable. The game is played through completing a bunch of RPG type quests, like having to go and buy something for someone, or kill a guy for someone. At this point, they have all been pretty simple, but fun. I worry that they may get repetitive as I play more, but I will save that for the review.

At this point, I’m really enjoying Warpgate, and as far as iPad games go, it seems to be a very good value for the amount of game play it offers. Stay tuned for my review in the next couple of days!
