TRON: Legacy takes lightcycle racing online.
TRON: Legacy is a completely 3D Light Cycle racing game that can be played on the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Because TRON: Legacy was created by PSP game designers, it has a similar look and feel as Wipeout Pure did for the PSP; quick racing with good visuals and intense gameplay. Similarly, the controls are very smooth and responsive compared to most racing games. But best of all, TRON: Legacy offers online multiplayer. Just create a Disney account, log in, and you are ready for some intense Light Cycle racing via wifi, and soon, bluetooth.
“But Light Cycles don’t race, they cut other people off in arena battle!” Well yes, but the multiplayer racing still incorporates this arena type gameplay because people can still get owned by Light Ribbons even in the middle of a race. There are also power-ups that help move the gameplay along by doing things such as replenishing speed boosts. The game looks great visually, especially on the iPad. The background scenery alone gives the game stunning visuals and a very TRON-like feel.
As a bonus, there is an included minigame in which the player flies a Recognizer. Tilt the screen to aim and fire at enemy crafts from a first person perspective while flying through multiple levels on a pre-determined path. Excessive shooting can cause the Recognizer to overheat, while taking too much damage will cause cracks to appear in the windshield. This seems to be a fun way to get some casual gaming in, but I doubt it will get much gameplay compared to the racing aspect of the game.
TRON: Legacy is a major upgrade from the TRON Light Cycle/Tank app. The gameplay is much more intense and the multiplayer option has a lot of potential. The game should be out on December 16th for $.99. Check out our hands-on video below featuring Rob from 148Apps.
