Topple 2 Hands On

The original Topple both surprised and delighted when it was released in fall of 2008. The simple gameplay, creative artwork, and personable blocks earned it a 4.5/5 in the review I wrote. So how does the sequel stack up? (lol)

It’s great. ngmoco has stepped things up in almost every way with Topple 2. While the main graphics stay pretty much the same, there are added texture effects that help add a new layer of polish. The game also features a new progress map that has you, um, “toppling” over many MANY different islands. Some of them have their own themes, that actually effect gameplay. The main game mechanics are all there, and the controls are the same as before (which is good, because they were already perfect).

At the end of each island, you play a final level that has you build a big stack, upon which a golden egg falls. At that point, you then have to remove your blocks by touching them so that the egg reaches the bottom. The trick to this is the egg is fragile, and will crack and break when it falls from high enough. So it would be wise to build the tower with this in mind. Definitely a fun little twist to the game. :)

The biggest addition to Topple 2 is the inclusion of a wi-fi multiplayer mode. Unfortunately, since ngmoco only provided one copy of the game, I was unable to test this feature, which is the reason you’re getting a “hands on” and not a review. If they get me another code to try the game with a friend in the future, I’ll change this to a review. Anyone else tried multiplayer? Let us know what you think!

All around Topple 2 provides TONS more content, with the same lovable block characters asĀ  before. I would have liked to see a bit more done in the way of new facial expressions or reactions from the blocks, but they’re just as fun to watch as before. For $2.99, you’re getting at least 3 times the content of the original game, which was $.99. If you liked the first, or even if you never played the first game, you won’t be disappointed if you pick this one up. In fact, you’ll probably find yourself smiling as you play it. :)
