SEGA have released Sonic the Hedgehog on the AppStore today. While we love to see Sonic’s glory days grace our beloved jesus phone, we can’t help but wish SEGA spent a little more time and brought out one of the newer games in his checkered library. No, we don’t mean rubbish like Sonic Unleashed, but instead how about the excellent Sonic Rush series on DS. For now we’ll just have to settle for this classic masterpiece… oh well!
Presented in two display modes of ‘arcade’ or ‘full screen’. The game features a Genesis (or Megadrive in the UK) style virtual d-pad and A button. In arcade display the controls are off screen, due to the smaller screensize, but in fullscreen mode they display as a semi transparent layer over the stretched to widescreen visuals. The game seems to be an exact port of the original right down to the frame-rate drops when you lose too many coins.
We’re not quite sure who this is aimed at. Most die-hard fans would have played this to death on their retro systems or through emulation, as well as being available online stores of the next-gen consoles. Still… for anyone who hasn’t played this original classic… well now you can.
Sonic the Hedgehog is out now for $5.99
