Rockstar announce Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars for iPhone and iPodTouch.
A Take-Two press-release confirms it with a commment from Rockstar’s Sam Houser where he says “Chinatown Wars is a perfect match for the iPhone and iPod touch. We are very excited to bring this incredibly ambitious version of Liberty City, with this level of detail and immersive gameplay on Apple’s new gaming platforms.”
This make perfect sense to us, with the DS version working so well, with unique touch elements not seen in any other GTA game… it should port over to the iPhone pretty well. The game was recently confirmed to be coming to PSP Go too. Hopefully we’ll get the visuals of the PSP version coupled with the controls of the DS version.
Gameloft recently released Gang$tar, a GTA clone… it will be interesting to see what happens to that franchise once the real deal hits the AppStore this fall.

The most interesting part of this to me is waiting to see how they price Chinatown Wars. I am so tempted to call this at $20, which seems wild, but if any game can do it…

that’s a good point. Surely they risk diluting their DS and PSP profits if they release the same game for only $9.99. Or will we be getting a lighter version of the game? Or possibly released in parts, or downloadable content!

Chinatown wars does not really lend itself to DLC, the world itself does not really feel different enough in parts to where I would pay for chunks of map or especially missions. I think that if it were to be split up we would have seen a new title, like “Chinatown Wars Stories”. I think where the sales security for the other handhelds will come in is the savvy consumer’s natural preference for tighter controls. Sure, the DS had some touch screen portions, but I think that the core gameplay of a top-down GTA requires precision in control to offset the oft-janky handling of vehicles.

I hate it because while I don’t like GTA games, I am always curious to see what they have done

I’d have to disagree on janky handling of vehicles. China Towns controls on DS are perfecto-mundo

Great game.I have played the ds version via emulator on my pc,and it’s incredible.Great story, great gameplay, and if i can have it on iphone, wow. This one is much better than these other copies, car jack streets, payback, and gangstar.benjamin, you know what, you are not real gamer. If you want full 3d play gangstar.
And if a developer like Rockstar, see the potential of the iphone, the iphone could really become gaming platform. Also other great developers might start developing for the iphone.

I dont see how it would work on the touch systems… i have it for the DS and loved it, but it will be much harder with one screen and no real buttons. i hope they nail it.

there is no comparison point, the gangstar is simply the best GTA 3D clone while chinatown wars is just an old gta styled game, it’s simple, do you prefer gta 3, vice city, san andreas or 4 over the 2 or 1? then take gangstar, if you prefer the original gta style, then go for the rockstar title

Well now now. Gangstar while being a great Iphone game is no match to the GTA3 and up neither in quality, nor creativity, not even polish. If chinatown wars pulls off what we saw on DS we will have a serious threat to students: the game is good enough to keep you playing for hours. personal experience.
