Details were slim for Telltale’s new adventure title.
We loved Puzzle Agent when it first launched on iOS last year, and this E3 we went hands-on with the upcoming sequel. We were shown a debug version of the full title, which allowed Telltale to highlight a few scenes and puzzles from the full game.
Based on what we saw, Puzzle Agent 2 doesn’t do much to change the formula of the first game. While Telltale mentioned that the puzzles were more varied this time around, the first of the two puzzles we were shown was a pallete swap for a puzzle from the first game, and the second was very similar to the shifting blocks puzzles we saw so much of before. Of course, we only saw a small fraction of the whole game so there is still room for variation in the final build and Telltale made a point of saying that it listened to community feedback.
This wouldn’t have been so troubling had the first game not had issues with repetetiveness itself. If they are to believed, I wish they had chosen a better representative sample of the new puzzle types, because their claims weren’t quite convincing.
Fear not, if you remember our review of the first Puzzle Agent the somewhat drab puzzles weren’t enough to stop us from having a great time. What really has me excited about Puzzle Agent 2 is the chance to experience Nelson’s trek back to Skoggins. In his quest to terminate unfinished business, the orignin of the mysterious gnomes will be revealed, and more secrets of The Brotherhood are unveiled. There are a few new characters along for the ride, most notably a mysterious puzzle lover named Korka.
Puzzles be damned, I just want to bathe in Puzzle Agent 2′s strange milieu when it launches June 30th. Telltale plans to charge $6.99 for the iPad version and $4.99 for the iPhone.
