Simplicity is often understated, and almost always misinterpreted. Upon first glance the Mizu Shell looks like a quite generic iPhone silicone case scaled to fit an iPad. The material used is a mixture of silicone and hard crystal. This gives the case both a bit of flex, and rigiditiy. Given the properties of the material the case is easy to put on and remove. It still retains the rigid edges often missing from soft silicone cases.
The Mizu Shell is lightweight, durable and can withstand and absorb quite a lot of punishment. Of course a high drop will harm the iPad as the material is not specially made to transform like for example the Tech21 d3o. The glossy surface is scratch resistant, and won’t show that it has been used extensively.
The case covers the volume, and silent button with the same material as the rest of the case. It seems to be moulded as one piece. This is great for durability, but sadly the material is a bit too rigid to have buttons operated through without using force. I also think that the volume controls aren’t properly marked, and it takes a bit of trial and error to get the result I want. The openings for charging, speakers, orientation and headphones are well placed. The Apple docks won’t work with the case on though.
Grip is vastly improved using the Mizu, and playing games become easier. Real Racing and other games where you tilt to steer feel more immersive, and I fare better than with the barebones iPad. The light weight of the Mizu also means that I can play without becoming exhausted.
There is no denying that the case lacks a wow-factor, and is fairly anonymous. The back only show Proporta in writing. A logotype, a cool pattern or a see-through part showcasing the Apple would be enough to give it a bit more identity. Perhaps the red or pink versions feel more vibrant than the black I have been trying out for this review. The case isn’t ugly, and it accentuates the curves and lines of the iPad well.
I underestimated the Mizu Shell when I first unpacked it. My first impression was that it looked boring, and felt bland. To some extent it still looks generic, but the properties of the case are definitely good. Great grip, and overall good protection makes it easy to recommend. Combined with a Advanced Screen Protector or other good screen film the case becomes a complete protective solution for the iPad. Now if I only knew what the heck a mizu is I would probably be able to write some snappy final words, but I don’t.
