Proporta Maya II Pouch for iPad review

The iPad is quite large compared to the iPhone, and creating a pouch for it isn’t simply a matter of multiplying the numbers. This is to some extent seen in the design of the Maya II. It feels like an upscaled version of prior pouches I have tested, and sadly it isn’t that easy to create a good iPad pouch.

When you keep the iPad in the pouch it feels quite safe, and most of it is protected from smaller bumps, and scratches. The top of the iPad lacks protection, both from impact and scratching. There is no strap or other solution to keep the pouch closed, which mean you have to make sure to carry the iPad top up at all times. whitemaya2The fact that the iPad needs to be easy to extract from the pouch also means that it can fall out if carried upside down. This is a flaw to me that is quite significant. The risk of the iPad falling out of the pouch made to protect it feels strange. I have tried gently moving the pouch back and forth, and the iPad starts sliding out too easily. Sure it takes a number of moves, but once it starts falling the iPad falls quickly, and lands hard. The tests have been performed above a soft sofa to ensure that one of the first iPads in Sweden won’t become a rather expensive iPad analogue.

The quality of the leather is excellent, and is soft to the touch. I would have liked to see some kind of pattern beside the front stitched on lines across the lower part. It looks a bit generic, and considering how edgy the Union Jack designs for the iPhone felt I know Proporta has got talent for style. A slot for papers would also be appreciated. As it is now the Maya II only protects the iPad, and little else.

mayablackbackThe Maya II is recommended to those who want to keep their iPad inside a briefcase or backpack, and avoid getting it scratched from other objects. It is not recommended as the sole protection solution, and I definitely recommend the Proporta Advanced Screen Protector screen film as a compliment. The ASP film is washable, and reduce sun glare to a great extent. It also reduces the risk of scratches to the screen, but it won’t save the iPad if it falls out of the pouch.
