Proporta Hard Shell Back Cover iPad 2 review

The Smart Cover from Apple is selling like crazy, and it is a really neat addition to the iPad 2.But a lot of buyers feel a need to have protection for the back of the iPad 2 as well. Many companies have jumped onto creating sleeves that can hold the iPad 2 with the Smart Cover attached, as well as thin back only covers. Proporta has created both these types of cases, and first up for review is the Hard Shell Back Cover.

proportaThe Hard Shell is a single piece of polycarbonate. It hugs the iPad 2 tightly with the entire left side open to allow the Smart Cover to attach to the side of the device as usual. The grip is strong on the iPad 2 along the right side, bottom and top left sides. I see, and feel no tendency for the case to fall off when handling it.

All functions are available inside the case, and there are large cut-outs for speakers, charge socket, volume controls and mute switch. The top of the case is a single large cut-out allowing easy access to the silent button and headphone socket. Using the iPad 2 with the Hard Shell attached is really easy. It doesn’t impede anything, and instead it adds a bit of grip. It is also nicer to hold in my lap during breakfast as it is not cold compared to the naked iPad.

img_0078For protection the Hard Shell offers a decent amount of impact protection, but the focus is really on scratch protection. The added friction of the case also means that the iPad is far less likely to glide off a surface, as compared to the naked device.

The Hard Shell is available in two different colours: black or white. There is absolutely no branding, pattern or texture to it. I am surprised that there isn’t even a Proporta logotype to be found. Furthermore the contrast between the black, or white polycarbonate against the silver aluminium doesn’t look that good. With such large cut-outs that are just rectangular without any design to even out the stark contrast it turns into a bit of an eyesore.

phpthumbphpProporta has created a great alternative to bump up the level of protection for Smart Cover users. The Hard Shell adds grip, warmth and does not interfere with the functions of the iPad or the fit of the Smart Cover. It lacks personality, branding and really stands out as a third party product stuck on the iPad 2. If you are a Smart Cover user this case still comes highly recommended due to light weight, and the fact that you as a used barely notices that it is there.

Just bought it on eBay and can’t wait for it to reach melbourne. It’s the case I was waiting for. No logo, no unnecessary branding or fancy colors. No lip, grips the iPad at the corners only and nothing else at the front, polycarbonate hard shell, space for smartcover. I got the white one. Had my first tiny knock after two months without back cover and was pissed off by it all day at work. It’s about time to protect it although I was stubbornly against it and just used a pouch.

My gripe with these shells is always the same: no compatibility with the standard dock. It can’t be to difficult for manufacturers to design one with a wedge matching the support on the dock, and perhaps provide a small piece of plastic film to apply in the area before the shell itself so that they overlap, so that scratch protection is ensured and dock compatibility is preserved. I mean what, do I have to patent the idea myself?

Please do DeInit. That’s my main issue also!
