Proporta Antimicrobial Silicone Case iPhone 3g/3GS review

I don’t like germs, I really don’t. Unseen crawlies, slimies and whatnots have always felt like some kind of alien threat. Not that I have OCD with an urge to scrub items and hands beyond clean. But I still want things to look clean, and if someone tells me that my phone makes me sick with germs I get nauseous from the thought. I had not given germs any thought when it comes to my iPhone until I got the Proporta Antimicrobial Silicone Case with SteriTouch. It is a case made to limit the exposure to germs, and bacteria. Given that the name of the case includes both antimicrobial and steri(le) it takes it quite seriously.

I haven’t got a lab in my basement, heck I haven’t even got a basement, so I haven’t got any Petri dishes to try how much bacteria this case eliminates. The silicone in itself attracts dust and other particles, and I can only hope that it somehow eliminates the extra biological material this brings. Furthermore there are two holes on the lower back that lets dust in. They can also serve as some kind of cooling vents, but I can’t really see a need for them.

phpthumbphp2The silicone covers the entire back, sides, and stick up a bit above the front edges. This gives the screen protection when you put the phone screen down. The cut-outs for headphones, mute switch, camera and power socket are precise. The volume controls and silent/hold button are covered by a thin layer of silicone, and work really well. The varied textures of the case makes it easy to grip, and gives variation to the touch. I have to say that I like the design of the case, and the minimal style. Proporta could have put a large crossed out germ on it or something to attract attention, but they didn’t. This would probably have increases sales as the antimicrobial attribute is what sets it apart from all other silicone cases.

A problem with the case is that it is quite loose. When playing games or just using the phone features this is only a minor issue. Along the sides and bottom the silicone does hug the phone, but not enough to give any resistance if you tug at it. This is a classic issue with most silicone cases as thin as the Proporta Antimicrobial. A huge problem is that I have managed to pick up the iPhone in such a manner that the case has come off completely. This happens when the iPhone is grabbed in one hand with the bottom corner in the inside of the palm. I know that this happens, and can avoid it. If I lend the phone to someone I feel quite insecure about them handling it.

Summary

Pros
Antimicrobial, and sterile case.
Lightweight.
Added grip.
Good silicone protection for back, sides and front.
Full functionality.

phpthumbphpCons
Loose silicone around the edges.
Can come off completely too easily.

The Proporta Antimicrobial Silicone Case is a niche case for those looking for a case that minimizes germs. The case shares the good and the bad of the silicone cases in general. It is light, soft, and adds grip. A bad thing is that it is loose around the edges, and can come off completely when handled in a rushed manner. I can still recommend the case to anyone looking for a good silicone case with an interesting antimicrobial property.
