Pong Reduced Radiation Case review

After years of discussions the fact that radiation is bad for you has been established. I kind of figured that would be the result after my own personal experience of radiation. Some ten years ago I had a phone by Nokia in my breast pocket when out driving in the northern part of Sweden. The distance to the next cellular station meant that the radiation was high, and actually got my heart to rush. A nasty experience, and the fact that I have a lump on my hip where I wore a Ericsson r310 for a couple of months further proves that phones radiate bad stuff. The question nowadays is what amount of radiation is needed to pose any kind of hazard to your health. The radiation transmitted from the iPhone is a lot lower than older phones. But just like we have been educated that even second hand smoking is really bad for you, the future will tell whether even the small amount the iPhone emits is dangerous or not.

img_0785If you don’t want to wait for the verdict whether your favourite phone fries your brain when using it you might be interested in the Pong case. It uses an effect called the Pong effect, and yes it is based on the classic game Pong. Basically the case lets the radiation bounce away from the phone, and your head. This is done by having a copper structure inside the back of the case. It works as a ladder, and lets the radiation escape the case like if it was a chimney. I have not got the equipment to test this technology. The physics based method doesn’t add any distortion to my calls though, and I have as good network coverage as with the case taken off. There are a lot of data from tests showing a reduction of SAR and EFI at the Pong Research site. The data seems to have been cross-examined, and tested by labs with no economic connections to Pong Research. From my own scientific background I see these numbers as valid, and reliable. The reduction of hazardous radiation is significant. The radiation is within the limits of the standard set today. In conclusion: The Pong case reduces radiation that would otherwise go into your head. The radiation is not deemed as hazardous as of today. You have to decide yourself what level of radiation you feel is ok to pound your brain with. To me a lower level is always preferred.

img_0783The case is made out of quite rigid thick silicone. It adds both bulk, and weight. At first I felt a bit hesitant using the Pong case as I don’t really like silicone cases. When silicone stretches around the charge port I find it hard to enjoy a case. The Pong case doesn’t seem to stretch at all, and the looseness it has on day one is the same two weeks later. All functions of the phone works, and the volume controls and silent/hold button are protected by silicone. The cutout for the mute switch is a bit small, and it is hard to operate it. I rather just slide the case off when I need to mute the phone. The silicone is a bit loose around the silent/hold button, and when you press it silicone slides across over the edge of the front. The iPhone is not dockable when in the Pong case. The silicone attracts quite a lot of dust, dirt and grime. Thankfully it can be washed with water without harming the Pong technology.

Impact protection is really good with the thick silicone around the back, and sides of the phone. The case also covers the front edges, and this lets you lay your iPhone screen down. still_life_on_whiteThe grip is enhanced when using the Pong case, and for gaming I would say that it is great. The silicone along the sides are quite rigid, but will of course move if you slide your finger against them. The texture on the back of the phone is quite relaxing to run your fingers over. It feels like a lizard, and the green version looks a bit like the skin of a reptile. The case is also available in black.

Summary

Cons
The silicone gets dirty and dusty easily.

A bit loose silicone around the edges, and charge socket.
Not dockable.

green_tabletop-copyThe Pong Radiation Reduction Case is a cool looking silicone case giving good protection. The fact that the case has been proven to reduce radiation makes it something worth considering if you are worried about radiation. In my experience being cautious is always rewarded in the long run. I hope that Pong Research develops a hard case version of the Pong case.
