PAP iPhone 4/4S cover review

The second iPhone case I have had the pleasure to try out from Swedish PAP is a combination cover. What might seem like a rather standard pull strap pouch includes a handy pocket, and a leather band for wearing around your neck. My experience with the PAP iPhone 4/4S cover can be divided into three different segments: it is too tight, it is quite nice and oh my God it broke. Quite an eventful week.

8381_20117425144650664265When I tried the pouch for the first time it was impossible to get my iPhone 4S into it. The leather was simply too tight, and the band to wear it around your neck had to be removed for me to even stand a chance. Within ten forceful attempts I managed to get the phone into the pouch. There is some stretch to the leather material, and seams. The exquisite leather material is soft, and really nice to touch and handle. This is my second impression, and I really started to enjoy the pouch. It is tight, and the pocket on the front can only hold one credit card with the phone inside it. It is quite a convenient pouch with the neck band attached, and I have used it at work with my keylock card in the pocket. The leather pull strap is not that good though, and too often it twists inside the pouch. When it has been twisted it is hard to insert the phone properly, and it turns into a quite annoying exercise to get it all in place properly.

After about a week of moderate usage the pull strap broke, and upon inspection the seams are far too weak and few. My wife is really good at sewing, and she immediately spotted that the seams should have been more criss cross, and an extra to keep the nylon band from fraying. The pouch still works, as an ordinary pouch that you have to push the phone up from the bottom. This is still not acceptable by a long shot.

Design wise I enjoy the clean straight lines, rugged edges and vintage feel. Some holes for the speakers had been preferred to allow the user to hear the ringer clearly. The materials used seem to be of good quality, and especially the neck band is made from a cool organic leather.

pap2Samples break when I test them, but that is because I push them beyond their ordinary uses or test claimed abilities. The iPhone 4 Cover from PAP broke under normal circumstances with normal usage. Upon inspection the fault was in the manufacture process, and perhaps even in the design process. A case or cover should last for at least six months of moderate usage, and hence I can’t recommend the PAP cover even if it still works as a pouch.

That’s a pretty bad experience you had there. Whilst made of decent quality leather, the case seems to be very poorly designed; sub-standard stitching and a weak strap is just unacceptable for a case costing €38. Yet another case to add the ever-increasing pile of crap that passes for iPhone cases….
