OtterBox Defender Series for iPhone 4 review

Protecting what is precious to you is a task not taken lightly upon by the folks at OtterBox. I have been using the Defender series for both the 3G and 3GS, and no harm has ever come to the iPhones. No matter if I have dropped the phone when exercising or if one of my children has used it as a chewing toy the Defender has taken the abuse without budging. After months of waiting for the iPhone 4 in Sweden I of course felt somewhat hesitant to handle the phone. What if I drop it, and there are no replacements to be found within Europe? Thankfully I got the sample from OtterBox the day before. With the Defender on I have been able to even hand the new object of desire to co-workers for a quick race in Real Racing.

apl2-i4xxx-20-c4otr2The new iPhone 4 Defender looks, and feels like military grade equipment. Completely in black with an exoskeleton of rugged plastic almost impossible to dent. The silicone is fastened upon the exoskeleton using hooks, and edges along the sides. For the most time it sits completely in place, but often a part of an edge comes loose when extracting the case from the holster. Just like the original Defender the protection comes in three layers with a plastic sheet built in protecting the screen. This has no problem with watermarks anymore, which is a great development from the original. Instead there seems to be a risk of dust and for example small hairs to enter the case. After a couple of days I have had to remove, and clean out the screen protector. There are no problems using the touch screen, and it feels almost as responsive as if it was naked.

For protection the Defender is the best possible solution for the iPhone 4. The new, and improved holster holds the phone securely even when running. It has a prong holding onto an indentation in the case. The phone can be worn with screen facing in or out, and the holster can be swiveled if you prefer to wear it horizontally or vertically or anywhere in between. The holster is somewhat bulky though, and that is to be expected from a case focusing on survival. All aspects of the phone is protected in the Defender, and there are silicone openings for the headphone jack, ringer switch and charge socket. The case is not waterproof, but certainly water-resistant in a light drizzle.

apl2-i4xxx-20-c4otr6The Defender feels cool, and mature with it’s almost military look and professional feel. It is pleasant to handle, cleans easily and allows access to all functions. There is one aspect that might be somewhat negative, and that is the fact that it hides the iPhone 4 a bit too well. The cutout on the back showcases the Apple logo but beyond that this could just as well be a really well protected Android phone. To show off the iPhone 4 I have taken the case off completely. The screen protection is somewhat interfering with the great screen when viewed from a slight distance. For my own personal use this is not as evident.

I am truly impressed with the Defender for the iPhone 4. OtterBox could have just made a new version of the 3G/3GS version, but instead they reinvented the entire case. With a secure holster it becomes a perfect choice for anyone working in a harsh environment. As it also looks like something that would be part of military equipment it would not surprise me to see a lot of use from soldiers. The same of course goes for the new case as the old, and that is if you have a clumsy lifestyle you better get one. You know who you are; at least I know I am. And with the carbon black Defender I can both live out my clumsiness, and look cool.

I just bought this case last week as I need a sturdy case for my military training, and I gotta say, it performs flawlessly. it’s a bit more expensive than other cases out now, however it’s worth it if you have to put your phone through any kind of beating.

I just got this a few days ago for my new 3GS. while loving the protection so far, there are two gripes that I have about the case. The silence switch is very hard to pull up if you have big or small hands nonetheless. Also, the water marks are horrible, I solved this by applying a anti-glare screen protector to my phone. Overall, this thing is the beast!!!!

I’ve had the Defender for the iPhone 4 for about a month now. I had the iPhone 3G with in a Defender so let me compare the two.
Both phones are a totally different shape. But of the two Defenders, the one on my 3G is a little better in my oppinion.
The iPhone 4 model is OK, however, I’m finding that the silicone outer “skin” tends to peel off the “exoskeleton” when I’m carrying it in my pocket. The cover also comes loose at the headphone jack cover and bottom of the case.
Overall I would rate it a 7.5 out of 10.
Would I recommend it to another iPhone 4 user, yes, however, there is room for improvement.

I agree with Mike. I had the the Otterbox for the 3Gs and now for the iPhone 4. I’ve had this one for 2 weeks now. The outer skin is constantly peeling away from the hard plastic. I mean, I’m having to push it back together all day long. I also have trouble with all of the covers (charger, headset and silence) coming loose. This is one of the most important features of the Otterbox to me as my kids are year round swimmers and I’m around a pool a lot (think splashes). There is a lot of dust entering from those parts that are coming loose all the time.
I’m glad they fixed the screen protector–no watermark–and I still feel like my phone is protected when I drop it. I’m just not sure how long it’ll be til those little covers rip off. Also, I really hope they get some other colors soon. Black is extremely hard to find in my purse.

I don’t know why almost every site I look at regarding this series 4 says it doesn’t have the watermark problem when it does. I got one yesterday and continue to get a watermark when I press the screen for various things.. picture taking, deleting from task window etc. I’ve contacted Otterbox to see what they have to say but I think I’m pretty much getting ready to take it back.

  • Austin

    @Marc,

Before you take it back, there is a simple trick to removing the water marks and there are various simple methods all over YouTube. Use a light amount of baby powder over the front of your screen before applying the screen protector. I have also heard that a screen shield on the iPhone helps to prevent the marks.

    Good Luck!!!!!

Lose the plastic screen all together, pop it out and get invisashield. This has worked for me for both iPhones. I do granite fabrication for a living and have had no issues with dust or scratches

  • Rich

    To the previous posters:

I agree with Bleu, I simply pushed the plastic screen protector out of the case front and installed an Invisashield. The inherent plastic cover, while a nice idea, interferes with the visual acuity of the Retina Display. For me, that’s unacceptable.

Second, for those of you complaining about the outer silicone skin pulling away from the case, you have most likely overstretched the silicone during installation, or have removed and reinstalled it one too many times. Or, it’s not seated properly to begin with. Check the fit and be absolutely certain it is snug in all of the places it is designed to grab. It can be a bit tricky.

I just purchased the case today for my iPhone 4. I have bad three previously 3G and 3GS. I have to say that immediately noticed that the charger silicon flap cover does not lock down properly without some work. Also to the people that advised to pop the clear plastic shield out and opt for a different one, where is your mind? Why should anyone have to alter their iPhone otter-box with more money to get the iPhone case they expected from the beginning?

I’m still happy with my purchase, but I do think that the two flap covers are goi g to be an issue later…

I agree with Bleu. I had this water mark thing when I installed the case. I didn’t understand that this is an inherent problem with the product. I was thinking of popping the case screen protector out and putting on a nice screen protector. I got this ScreenGuard mirrored screen protector. So far it looks very cool, but if the slight distortion of colour drives me nuts I will just replace it with another, as my choices are virtually endless. This way I am not stuck with a substandard aspect in an otherwise excellent product. My iPad defender case came with an insallable screen protector, I’m sure due to an uncontrollable “water mark” problem. it is a real pain in the bottom to install, but a superb combination of protection in the iPad Defender case. Worth $90 from the manufactuer + tax + shipping, I got mine brand new in a box off of ebay delivered in my hands paid entirely for just shy of $60. So far I think that while I don’t really have the money to spend on a new case. (I was really hyped about last case when I ordered it. It was the ZooGue case v1.0, proved to be substandard.)

sum up: defender rocks! … just ensure you nip out the screen protector that come attached to the unit and put something good on and life is great for an under $2 fix.

efixuser babbling off. . . gnight.
