N.O.V.A updated for Gyro and Retina display

Gameloft have released an iPhone 4 optimised version of N.O.V.A. Not content with just updated, retina enhanced, graphics- which looks better than even the iPad version – but it has also been given the Gyroscopic treatment. So, not only can you use the touch screen to aim, but now you can turn your whole body in the real world to affect your in-game viewpoint. It’s a bit of a gimmick, but it’s eerily realistic for motion. It’s best experienced by sitting in a rotating chair like an office chair. And then spinning in the direction you want to turn. While controlling this way is perfectly doable throughout the game, its best used for stationary sections like the gattling gun… for those of you who have already tried ngmoco’s Gun Range, then you’ll know how it works.

N.O.V.A is currently $4.99 for iPhone and $6.99 for iPad (with no gyroscope features). You can read our review here, and our iPad/iPhone head-to-head here

There seems to be a major bug with the update affecting some users (reading some reviews on the app store), rendering the game completely unplayable. The analog stick and fire button are missing, therefore I cannot move or shoot…just aim. I restarted the device, but no luck.

I didn’t have that problem at all

Well found a fix for anyone experiencing the problem…just delete and reinstall the game. Had to start at the beginning of the game though.

    Pintos-n-cheese here!

Haven’t talked with the likes of you in about 2 years! My has iPhone gaming progressed. Lovin it!

Just started jungle level of NOVA on 2g iPod Touch. Getting iPod Touch 4 with retina for Christmas. Should I pause till then to finish NOVA, like is the retina graphics of the game that much better?

    Thanks!

    2nd question:

    Haven’t tried NOVA 2 yet.

Is there an FPS like NOVA but more like Meteoid Prime where you need a map and must explore more instead of just point A to B shooting?

I don’t think 3D platforming will work, but exploring these vast gorgeous worlds in 3D with maze likeness and hidden paths would make, say NOVA 3, sick!

  • Nigel Wood

Definately. Plus the gyro controls are great fun.

  • Nigel Wood

@2nd question. No, actually NOVA 2 is less like metroid then the 1st
