E3: Mooniacs Impressions

Mooniacs is a puzzle game from Namco that follows the familiar level-based iOS puzzle formula. Pan around to survey the area, fling your character in the chosen direction, and knock down some things in the hopes of collecting all of the items on screen. While the actual mechanics outside of the flinging aren’t exactly like Angry Birds, the game has a similar feel.

As mentioned before, your goal is to collect all of the on screen items, called jujubees, with your projectile. In your way are obstacles that you must circumvent, and extra characters. When the player’s projectile  enters a non player character’s (NPC) influence circle, the NPC will fall from whatever position it was sitting at. If positioned correctly, the projectile will collect enough jujubees, trigger the NPC- which will hopefully fall and collect the remaining jujubees, and finish the level. The fact that the NPCs we encountered could only fall in one way limited the creativity that one could apply to each given scenario.

One feature Namco was sure to point out was the collaborative online leaderboard. As players collect more jujubees they are entered into a global pool that will eventually unlock new level packs for all players to use.

Mooniacs is yet another colorful and mildly unique puzzle game for iOS, look forward to its universal release later this year.
