Feather light is definitely a good description of the monCarbone Hovercoat for iPad. It weighs in at 42 grams, and it is barely noticeable when you use it. Adding some good protection, cool looks and improved grip the question is whether it warrants the rather hefty price tag.
monCarbone is a company completely devoted to the world of carbon fiber. They have a variety of items for sale made from the material. I am not an expert when it comes to the material, and how hard it is to manufacture. I can’t say if the price of the Hovercoat reflects expensive production costs, or if it relates to design.
The Hovercoat has got a suitable name indeed; it is like a coat for the iPad that is as light as if it hovered above it. The fit is perfect, and it almost melts into the steel of the pad. Almost like a superhero brandishing a suit it blends together to form one.
For protection the Hovercoat completely covers the back, and most of the sides. There is no protection for the screen, or front edges whatsoever. For most users this is a level of protection that works well in most environments. I would recommend having some sort of sleeve, or bag when moving it outside though between the workplace and home for example. The carbon fiber is strong, and even though it weighs less than 10% of the iPad it will absorb impact damage if dropped on the back.
The grip is enhanced using the Hovercoat when compared to the naked iPad. It is however not comparable to using a rubberized or silicone case. The Hovercoat comes in two different black finishes, and they differ slightly in touch. The matte finish is slightly better for grip, but isn’t as eye-catching as the glossy finish. Telling them apart is hard by the names but apparently midnight is glossy, and mystery is matte.
It is easy to tell that the Hovercoat is an expensive high end product even though it has no other special feature than being made from carbon fiber. The weave patterns around the edges, the complete lack of mould lines and tight fit. If you are looking for a great lightweight case definitely consider the Hovercoat. It is the perfect companion when using the iPad in bed or in a sofa, as it weighs practically nothing.
