Modern Combat 3: Multiplayer hands-on

When I left the house this morning, I told my wife I’d be late home because I was going to shoot a couple of people in the face after work. By this of course, I meant I was visiting the Gameloft studios to play a preview build of Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation multiplayer, not going on a bloody rampage round the office with a shotgun. The funny thing is, she didn’t even bat an eyelid. She just kissed me goodbye and reminded me to take my lunch. Hmm.

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation is due to drop on October 27 on iPhone and iPad, and after our single player hands-on back in August, we finally got to give the multiplayer portion a try.

moderncombat3-1It is looking seriously beefy, with six maps, seven game modes and up to 12 players online (up from two last time out). There’s also 100 ranks available for levelling up, with each rank providing a new perk, such as faster reloads, faster movement, last stand grenades, etc.

Each weapon and it’s subsequent attachment also features it’s own set of challenges (head shot your editor 50 times with the silencer attached for example), and there’s good news for those of you who enjoy blowing up the entire map after killing ten people in a row; kill streak rewards make an appearance, for example three successive kills gets you satellite scan, with more getting you the likes of turret deployment, air support and even a full nuclear strike! You’ll also be able to share your kill stats online, including viewing your match history, scoreboards, leaderboards, and earn a range of trophies, such as best kills, and best ally.

Gameloft took us through a few scenarios, including standard deathmatches; Bomb Squad, where you must plant bombs in enemy territory as well as dissarm them in your own backyard; and Zone Control, which is a bit like capture the flag but with multiple zones to capture and defend.

moderncombat3-2Graphically, it’s shaping up nicely, with a far higher amount of details in the multiplayer maps, which are larger and more detailed. We played it on both the iPad 1, iPhone 4 and iPad 2, and it was particularly clear that the iPad 2 version sports a visual upgrade over it’s older brother, with crisper geometry and extra texture details on weapons and environments. Watch out too for the cool blur effect when running away from your best mates shotgun. No word yet on iPhone 4S improvements, but we may have to wait for future updates before we see any 4S specific features.

So, in just a few weeks time, you can jump online and get a taste of the latest in the Modern Combat series, which is looking like it could rival even it’s obvious console inspiration in multiplayer robustness.

Check out the video below as Nigel and I take on Gameloft at their own game… and lose!

  • Luke

    Thanks for the video.

Any word if the multiplayer be supported by wifi only or will it work over 3g?

  • Bondzox

Kill STREAKS or kill CHAINS? MC2 uses killchains…

  • Krazyred21

    Will MC3 work for a 2G ipod??

  • Nigel Wood, UK

I think they are called ‘Kill Chains’ @Bondox but it’s all the same thing anyway ;)

  • Kevin Moore, UK

Chains, streaks…whatever. All that matters is that on 27 October, we’re going to jump online and I’m going to rocket launcher you all in the eye. Until then Mon ami.

  • technobeat

The japanese beta is out now :D

  • bondzox

Ok cool killchains… just wondering about that simply because you can’t get a nuke by camping with killchains… cool thanks for that

  • bondzox

And by the way, the reason that it is important is because killstreaks mean kills without dying, while killchains mean kills without dying in a certain time period… prevents camping :)

  • sylv

  • Krazyred

Will this game work for a 2G ipod ?

  • Nigel Wood, UK

Should play fine on 3GS and the similar spec iPod Touch.

  • Legitmuffinman

NO. The 2G itouch will not support this game. 3G and above. I am wishing this will be a parallel release for android because I want to play it so effing bad!!!!!

  • USSR_Crazykid22

It’s only 9 days, but it seems like an eternity! This game looks absolutely amazing. The only thing Modern Combat 2 was missing were the more diversified perks and kill chain rewards. Modern Combat 3 seems to have exceeded all expectations. But what’s new? It IS Gameloft.

  • Bondzox

    Hey.
I realize that this is another one of those personal questions that only applies to me, and you probably dont care. But ill give it a shot.

I have an ipad, and i play the ipod version of mc2 on it, simply because i dislike the controls of the ipad version. I just buy the ipod version if the app, and boom, i am done. No lag because, well, its an ipad using ipod graohics, bigger screen, and easier controls. Everything was great.

However, in 9mm, the ipod and ipad versions if the game were the same and people on an ipad could play people on an ipod and vice versa ( i think ) this didnt work so well for me – odd controls, lag, etc.

So my point is, will modern combat 3 be sold seperately for ipod and ipad like modern combat 2, or will it be the same like 9mm?

    Thanks.

  • Travis

there is no 8gb 3rd gen ipodtouch… if its 8 gb its a second gen

  • http://www.dailytechin.com Billy Fischer

This is gonna be awesome… I played MC2 for like 2 weeks and got to lvl 63 but got bored. After seeing this video, ive been playing for the last two hours. Btw, is it possible to favorite a video? I LOVE TOUCHGEN!!!!!

  • D34TH44LL

When i read killstreaks i immediately forked out £6.99 from the bank. Im willing to pay that for a game of this quality. To be honest, the more it copies CoD the better in my opinion because im a CoD addict but it isnt on iOS so the MC series fills the “EPIC FPS” gap in the appstore.

  • Fjdjdjdj

Will it b rrleased for itouch 2g and if not tell me a source ppl i will not just rely on u

  • Billy Bilo

Let’s check our checklist shall we?

    1. Learn how to spell.
    2. Ask questions.

  • USSR_Crazykid22

@Billy Bilo Hahahahaha I know right??

  • will

@travis Are you stupid or just in a different country than the rest of us. there is an 8 gig 3g ipod touch, but if its 16 gig its 2nd gen

  • john

Can I make this clear the game will only run on ipad 1 and 2 and ipod touch 3rd gen(excluding 8gb version) and fourth generation. It will run on iphone 3gs 4 and 4s. This game will definitely not run over 3g only wi-fi.

  • ashtor

So if you played it on iPhone 4, it comes out for iPod 4g too, right?

  • Aaron

There is NO SUCH THING AS AN 8gb 3G touch!!! That is strictly 2g! And no. It will NOT work on any 8gb unless it’s iTouch 4, iPad, or iPhone 3GS. Bummer too, cuz I’m stuck at 8gb 2g and can’t upgrade to the 5g yet… This game however, just gave me one heck of a reason to get the 32gb 5g.

  • Lolz

Hope they won’t let people spamming grenade.

  • bondzox

    They don’t :)
grenades have been really nerfed… the explosion size is perhaps bigger than in mc2 a but pulling the pin takes time plus your throw is somewhat innaccurate, plus it has a fuze… you can sprint away from a grenade lying on the ground.
It doesn’t play the same as mc2 either – you need to be smart and observant to get kills. Plus, there is no butterfly.

  • Lolz

    To bondzox
1.you don’t need to pull the pin to throw it.
2.you can’t sprint in mc2 and it explode on contact which make it hard to dodge.
    3.OMG butterfly?

  • els

this game is not suppored on ipod touch 2g only works on iphone 3gs,4gs,5gs ipod touch 3g,4, and ipad
