Metal Gear ‘not’ Solid?

Fans of the Metal Gear series who have been hotly anticipating the iPhone version of the game ‘Metal Gear Solid Touch’ may be in for some disappointment.

Through their, rather swish, official site. Konami have revealed details of the game, and for those hoping for a full on 3D MGS adventure, well, you may be out of luck. The new site explains how you control the action with your fingers using multi touch. Dragging your fingers to take aim, pinching to zoom and tapping to fire. An example video shows the game to employs pre-rendered graphics, and not the almost ‘to-good-to-be-true’ realtime 3D that some were expecting. So, it’s basically iSniper with Snake!

Not all is lost though. Fans of MGS4 will be able to relive the action of the PS3 game through familiar locales and boss fights.

The site goes on to reveal that the game will be in two parts. A ‘special’ early release version, which carries your saved data over to the eventual final release, featuring the most revealing chapters of the original game. You can also earn Drebin points (the gun smith from the MGS4 story) who rewards you with…. wait for it! iPhone wallpapers [Woo-Hoo!]

Apart from not delivering what we hoped for, if Shooter from Paramount is anything to go by then this type of game can be fun, so for now we’ll reserve judgement. Check out the screens and trailer below. For more, visit the official site here.

We scoff, but being rewarded with wallpapers is the kind of thing I like to see. It’s putting the use the unique features of the iPhone. I think more devs should do things like this in games. Why not exploit the fact that it’s a phone and give you “phone” type features?

ringtones and movie clips maybe, but wallpaper? The iphone doesn’t really have wallpapers anyway, apart from the unlock screen! Which you only see for a split second.

  • legend.inc

i agree with Nige. i dont even see the unlock screen. its kinda automatic for me to unlock it without even looking.

  • Jay

I’d like to see something like ringtones too, but my brother, who has the iPod Touch, says that the iPod users want something that they can use too

I think at this point apple should start looking into releasing some sort of gamepad addon for the iphone…

motion control and touchscreen are fine…but not the best for actiongame…

  • Ipgn-nige

hmmm, I just don’t think a gamepad would get picked up by the masses. And because of that, developers wouldn’t support it.

  • Bmamba

yeah? I dunno if it s small and compact a bleutooth gamepad may work. I would buy it

It could be usefull even for nongamer… How many time you wish your iphone got some kind of remote to skip a song?

  • http://twitter.com/daveleclair iPGN-Dave

It couldnt hurt having a gamepad, I know I would like to have one, but like said before, if not enough people buy it devs wont support it, and then it will be a failure. There’s supposed to be one coming out that works on Jailbroken phones, not that anyone here would jailbreak their phone ;-)

  • iPGN-Nige

there is a remote for skipping songs on your iphone Bmamba, it’s called the headphones!… just double click the button on the wire ;)

  • Bmamba

Ahah! Thank s’ for the tips nige… Shame I don t use the original headset :(

Please, please, please. Bring out Metal Gear Acid, with online and local multiplayer. I know that game wasn’t a huge hit and it’s because most people only played it single player. Multi-player the game is a whole other animal where the combination of your deck and strategy combine for some awesome gameplay. Is it just me or does that green finger thing like like a shilluete of genitals? -Dave!

I think you guys are forgetting that the whole point of an iPod gaming is the touch screen. With a d-pad it would be just like a ps3 or xbox with a very small screen and lesser quality of graphics. Anyway with a controller wouldn’t it be a bit hard to play on the go if it was wireless.

I mean most people use the iPhone or iPod to play while in a bus ( i.e most when travelling).
