Macally Dualstand iPad 2 case review

The Dualstand is the first iPad 2 case I have tried out since my late entry into the league of iPad 2 owners. Macally is one of the major sellers of cases for Apple devices, and as usual they have a large spring collection on the shelves. All cases have their own unique abilities, and the Dualstand features a dual stand ability. Not too surprising given the name.

The Dualstand is a lightweight soft plastic case that covers the back, and edges of the iPad 2. Getting the iPad 2 into the case takes some work, and you have to rub around the corners to get it on properly. Once on the case hugs the edges tightly, and only the area around the sync/charge socket feels flimsy.

dualstand2_03All functions are available when inside the case. Cut-outs for charge socket, mute switch, speaker and headphone socket. The volume controls, and silent button are covered with a thin layer of plastic. These are still responsive, and are easy to find due to proper indentations.

To fold out the stand in the back of the case it takes quite a lot of force. There are two different stands to fold out. The shorter allows for a better angle when typing as a keyboard. It requires an even surface, as the stand is quite thin. This also goes for the larger stand that lets you keep your iPad 2 at a 45 degree angle. It works really well viewing videos when doing something else. It will not work if you want to lie in bed watching videos with the iPad 2 next to you on the bed. For me the stand functionality is kind of limited, as it only allows for landscape orientation in one direction. There is one negative effect of the stand as well. Because the stand goes in the middle of the back the integrity of the shell is compromised. This means that the case isn’t hugging the back completely. bild1When holding it there is a bubbly sensation, as the material flexes with air between plastic and metal. Not a big deal, but still worth noting in my opinion.

The Dualstand looks really cool with the black and yellow bee colour scheme. This of course works best with the black iPad 2, as the black and yellow is a better mix than yellow and white. In the end the Dualstand is a good alternative for those who want to sit at a table or other stable surface, and watch movies. The stand is not sturdy enough to really use the iPad 2 for work or games. As a protective case that looks really cool the Dualstand is a nice lightweight product.
