ngmoco seems to have settled on a final name for their new shooter.

iPhone gaming powerhouse, ngmoco, has released a teaser site for their highly anticipated (right?) online FPS deathmatch game. There are two juicy videos, including a very informative infomercial on how their “power/credit” system will work. As it appears, you only have so much power for your suit per day. When you run out of power, you stop making credits for you kills, but can still play as “practice”. According to the video, you can then buy new power cells to re-charge your suit and start earning credits again. In-game purchases, anyone?

There aren’t any more details, so I don’t what “credits” do, but this certainly seems like a slick way to run a game like this. They get you hooked, and let you play without paying any sort of subscription fee, but force you to pay money if you want to play more than the allotted time. I’m assuming credits will allow you to buy upgrades and such in a in-game store. What do you guys think of this idea? Sounds to me like it could be entirely too addicting… meaning ngmoco are freaking geniuses.

Cool site, but this is the third name they have given the game. Hope it doesn’t struggle for identity in the gameplay department!

I expect Apple didn’t like Kill in the title!

I like the idea of it, but I tend to shy away from any gameplay that hinges on micro-transactions. If I can play for ~2 hours without buying credits, or maybe build up gameplay credits over time, then sure, sign me up! If this turns out more like those insidious “free-to-play” games that only allow about 15 minutes of truly free gaming per day, then I say screw that.

Micro-transactions can play a positive force in the industry. Take a game like WoW, for example. They charge a monthly fee that you have to pay regardless of whether you’re going to be playing or not. Some people get too busy with that thing called life to get their money’s worth. But if you don’t pay the fee, you lose your characters. That could be years of hard work. With micro-transactions, it’s pay to play, but with very small individual charges. A well designed economy should allow people to play for a reasonable amount. In fact, many now feature consignment stores, that allow the economy to support not only the publishers, but the hard core fans as well.

If you just like to play for free, then, well… I can’t say I’m very sympathetic.
