Man, you guys really gave the love to Galaxy on Fire.
I picked it up as soon as it came out, and much as I want to love it (I was a huge fan of Elite, Freelancer, Privateer, etc), I just can’t get into it.
The controls don’t seem precise, making it difficult to make the small adjustments necessary to keep an enemy in your sights. There’s no throttle. You don’t have any freedom until after you “beat the game”, and then the galaxy opens up for you to travel at will and choose your missions. The sandbox quality of these games is a huge draw for the genre, and the inability to access any of this until after you’ve completed the story detracts from the offering in my opinion.
I have to admit that I also find a lot of these precursor missions to be very difficult. This would be a good thing for a title where the game ends after a small number of missions. On the other hand, when the real game (freedom to explore, choose between missions, trade between worlds, try out and configure various ships, etc) doesn’t start until after you finish these first dozen missions, I really wish they wouldn’t kick my tail over and over again as I try to slog my way through them. I’m about half way through them now (I’m currently on the same mission that Nigel mentioned on the podcast).
Finally, the game has crashed on me. A lot. I’d say that roughly half the time I finish a mission or try to switch to/from the hanger, it crashes. And I have rebooted my iPhone several times since installing the game and have never jailbroken the device.

I’m still playing it before I give my final verdict. I’ll consider your comments… cheers BadYeti. I am loving it though, it’s still the best space shooter on iPhone.
BadYeti on Mon, 30th Mar 2009 11:39 pm
Yeah, it’s definitely the best space shooter on the iPhone so far. I just wish it were a tiny bit better.
On the upside, most of my concerns should be easily patchable if the developers decide to implement some refinements.

Sounds like I missed a good show, may just have to listen to it lol

You could shoot in doodle jump. I got 32,000 without knowing that. I’ll be back after improving my score.
Legend.inc on Tue, 31st Mar 2009 9:14 pm
hey I’m back. Guess what I got about 45,000 on the game. I’m 33rd in the world. Beat that!

Missed Dave, he’s always good for some cock and ball jokes. Still enjoyed the show but I really love when all four of you guys are on, Nacho and his humor was a great addition.
Doodle Jump
I didn’t know you could shoot either, I played Papi jump but there is something about doodle jump that just clicks. I love the spring sound, for some reason I could listen to that all day.
I’m fortunate enough to have an iPod touch 2G and an iPhone. As far as the way games go they run a little smoother sometimes on the touch but it’s really not that significant from my experience. The iPhone though has way better battery life even with the phone on and 3G. The cool thing is you can download the games you buy on both devices for 1 price as long as they are on the same itunes account.

Dave thought his girlfriend was more important… you need to sort out your priorities son!
iPGN-Matt on Wed, 1st Apr 2009 12:17 am
Hey legend, I just got 55,000+ today… and guess what happened. THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED WHEN I GOT 45,000. The game didn’t let me submit my score because it couldn’t connect to the server. I actually emailed the dev about this, because it’s really frustrating to know I would be in the top 5 otherwise. The game should store your score to submit later if it doesn’t detect a network connection.

Excuses, excuses! sheesh!

OMG, my highscore posted somehow! I’m currently at #5… but all it says is “iPGN” lol. Haha well at least I’m on there.
iPGN-Nige on Wed, 8th Apr 2009 12:16 am
my review of Galaxy on fire is still pending due to a new version just handed to me this week which fixes many bugs.

Great show guys. Actually I bought and enjoyed MGS Touch quite a bit even though I haven´t played more than the Metal Gear on Nes and Xbox. Shallow yet fun, but I would probably rate it along your score Nige.
Thanks
