Glu makes good use of their Glyder engine in this movie tie-in.I need to get this out, because it’s been eating me away inside… I haven’t posted a review for Glyder 2 yet! Yes, yes… despite having played the game (and enjoying it quite a lot), I haven’t been able to sit down and put my thoughts on paper… er…screen. I bring this up, because the entire time the wonderful people at Glu were showing me How to Train Your Dragon, this was in my mind.
Sorry, Glu!
How to Train Your Dragon is a Glyderesque movie tie-in to the upcoming movie from Pixar with the same name. The story starts with the main character shooting down an illusive dragon during a nightly attack on his village. Rather than killing the beast, Hiccup takes care of it, and they form a secret friendship. The game won’t follow the exact story of the movie, but rather will fill in some gaps, and create a side story of it’s own.
The gameplay is very similar to the Glyder series, in that you use the accelerometer on the iPhone to fly around, collecting items (bugs, in this case) and completing challenges. A nice plus to being on a dragon is the lack of needing to constantly search for updrafts to glide on. Obviously, the dragon has wings, so you can fly around at will without worrying about losing air and plummeting into the ground.
Also different from Glyder, HtTYD will feature a storyline, which makes it less casual. How to tame your dragon features 3 islands, with 11 missions, 8 challenges, and 200 collectible bugs. There is also a slew of achievements to attain in-game, and you can get upgrades for your dragon.
How to Train Your Dragon will be available in a couple days, on March 11th.

Man, even the map looks like the Glider 2 map…(maybe the Glider 1 map as well, but I haven’t played that one, so I wouldn’t know).
Glider 2 is a great game, so once I finish it, I will probably get this one rather than Glider 1 since it sounds like a step forward with a storyline included.

Oh by the way, I assume the movie has the same title? I’ll be looking for the adult version of it, “How to Drain Your Dragon.” (Rimshot.)
