Hands on with The Deep

Gameprom sent us a preview build of their new pinball game ‘The Deep’ today. This is their second pinball game, the first being Wild West Pinball which we reviewed here. It was a solid effort and stood out particularly with it’s detailed and realistic graphics and physics. This however, seemed to be at the expense of extra features above and beyond a regular pinball table experience. Something that gamers increasingly expect these days.

the_deep_pinball_4The Deep takes things further visually, with an even more heavily themed design based under water, amongst sunken pirate ships and treasure. Gameprom have done a fantastic job of realising this and the game really looks great, coupled with a dynamic camera which zooms in and follows the ball around the table, it looks very polished. There’s more to do on the table this time round with a mission structure, requiring yo to activate a mission and then follow checkpoints to complete it, it adds a little more to the game besides shooting for high scores. Speaking of shooting, the shoot out section from Wild West is back, except this time it’s called Hunting, and instead of a gunslinger, you must take out a great white shark.

Audio-wise it features some good tunes, as well as voice over work in both the game, and a tutorial featuring an eastern European lady, flirting and taking you through a guided tour of the table. It’s a nice feature and adds to the overall production quality. Beyond the game there are online high scores, but I would like to see integration of the more popular online servers such as Open Feint as well as Facebook and Twitter integration so you can challenge your friends. I’m also concerned that The Deep will have the same life span problem as Gameprom’s previous title in that beyond the basic pinball experience there isn’t much more to the_deep_pinball_1do, it makes me wonder whether some extra table within the same theme would be a welcome addition, or even the pack-in of both Wild West and The Deep together as one game to add variety. After playing The Deep, I don’t see any reason to play Wild West anymore, so they may as well include that game too, to give the game more Appstore selling power by being better value for gamers.

As it stands, The Deep, like it’s wild west cousin before it is shaping up to be another solid pinball game. Look out for it soon on the AppStore at a no-doubt similar price of $2.99… as well as a closer look on it’s release in our review.
