The news that we have all been patiently waiting for has finally arrived. Rockstar have finally released the highly anticpated GTA: China Town Wars for iPhone and iPod Touch.
Originally released on DS, and later to PSP with updated graphics, the game sees you play as new arrival to Liberty City, Huang Lee. And as usual sees you taking on various crime based missions to rise through the ranks of the criminal underworld.
Following his father’s murder, Huang Lee has a simple mission: deliver an ancient sword to his Uncle Kenny to ensure his family retains control of the Triad gangs of Liberty City. Huang is a spoiled rich kid who expects everything to run smoothly, but his trip does not go exactly as planned. After being robbed and left to die, he will search for honor, riches and revenge in the most dangerous and morally bankrupt city in the world.

It’s fantastic if you can get past the top-down view.

Yes, this really is great. I waited to see if an iphone version came out, and not only did I get it at a discounted price but I also got a version where I can very easily make my own custom playlist for driving in the vehicles. I really think that the custom radio station is a standout feature, sure it has been in other games and other GTA games at that but the implementation in this case is so slick.

… and for those who are worried; the controls work just fine after a couple of minutes of adjustment. In some cars, going easy on the gas and remembering to brake make the difference between success and frustration.

The controls are playable but the driving and combat feel very wonky. I just hope with the 4G Apple add some buttons to make functionality of apps easier.

A button add-on would be great, and could service the existing userbase. Of course, they would love to get you to buy a new one! I think having the buttons built in to a device would go against Apple’s MO, and wouldn’t expect that. Something more along the lines of a shell would make sense.
