GodFinger iPad review

ngmoco’s god game finally hits the AppStore, but for iPad only… for now. So how does it play on the big screen?

GodFinger, as the name implies is a simple game where you play god, using only your finger. It is somewhat similar to Pocket God on the iPhone, but it has more distinct objectives. Most games of this type are more toys then they are games, but GodFinger aims to change that by adding more clear goals. They succeed partly, but it’s still more toy then game, but at least it’s a step in the right direction for this type genre. The best is way to describe the premise of the game is Farmville plus Pocket God, with some ngmocco flair.

In GodFinger you are tasked with having a little crew of followers who worship you. Your goal is to keep resources flowing in by keeping your followers working, while also balancing their rest and happiness. If you work then too hard they will become tired and unable to work, but if you let them sit idle for too long they will not be generating resources.

Speaking of resources, there are a number of different types in the game. The first is mana. Mana is what allows you to make rain, sunshine and other powerful effects happen. These shape the landscape and also aid in making your followers happy. The next resource is gold, and this is used to buy new buildings and things of that nature for your planet. The final resource is awe. Awe is the resource you purchase with real money, and it can be used to get more gold, mana and special items. The game is completely free, and can be played without ever spending a penny, but the option to buy more stuff is there. There are also ads in the game, and clicking them will gain you some more mana.

Most of what you do in the game is move your followers around by grabbing them with your finger. You move them from mana generating totems, to gold generating farms or to a fountain or campfire if they get too tired to work. It’s a delicate balance that is fun to try and manage. An extra layer of challenge is that game continues on, even when you are not actively playing. If you don’t play for a long time all of your followers will become exhausted, and you won’t be generating any more resources. If enough time passes, your followers can die, and obviously that’s bad. Fortunately, there are push notifications to alert when your followers need attention.

It’s a cool concept, that makes a game like this way more fun. Not just sitting on a flat plane makes for more creative options, and it makes it feel more like you actually running a whole planet, and not just a small island.

The game also has some pretty cool social options using Plus+. You can zoom all the way out to the galaxy view and see any of your friends planets. You can also go and visit their planets and play around and mess with their followers.

Speaking of which, you do have some options to do bad things to your followers. There are lightning bolts and things like that if you are feeling devious. I personally preferred to take good care of my followers, because I’m a nice guy.

The art style is very pleasing to the eye, especially considering the game is free to play. The followers look really cute and friendly, and they put me in a good mood whenever I see them.

The sound is also cute, and fits with the theme of the game. The people in the game make a lot of funny sounds, and all the buildings have sound effects when you have them in the view of the camera.

Overall, there is no reason not to get God Finger, it’s not the deepest game, but it’s free. It does have some more objectives then other games of the type, but it’s still more of a toy than a game. That said, it’s a fun toy, that you should at least give a shot.
