Mobsters is coming to the iPhone, and Playdom is making it happen.
Almost everyone has come across one of the Mobster simulations at one point of another, either on Myspace, Facebook or just a web app. I personally have sunk a lot of my time playing a couple of the turn based, text, MMO type of games at various websites. Currently, Mobster is hugely popular on Myspace, boasting over 13 million users, so it only makes sense that Playdom would look to bring thet popularity to a portable platform like the iPhone. After all, people who are really into these types of games tend to check them many time a day, so it seems logical enough to me that you would want to be able to use up your turns while you are on the road. (Well not the literal road, that would be very dangerous, don’t play game while driving please
. )
They are looking at trying to expand the game experience for current players, but they are also hoping that the flexibility of being able to take the game anywhere you go will draw in lots of new players to the game. Many of the games more hardcore players have issued complaints about the way the mobile Safari browser displays it, and that’s because the game was not originally intended to be a game you take on the go with you. That’s all going to change with the launch of the app.
Playdom has not decided 100 percent on the price of the game, but they seemed to hint at the game being free with micro-transactions being the way they monetize things.
I find myself very compelled by the game, I haven’t played one of these text MMO’s in a while, but being able to take it out and about with me sounds like something I would get hooked on. Look for the game “very soon.”
(As an aside Playdom asked me let everyone know that they are hiring, so if you are a web developer then go to Playdom.com and check to see if anything they have available will suit you.)
