Gangstar: Miami Vindication

Gameloft have revealed a video for their upcoming sequel to Gangstar coming soon to iPhone and iPad…Called Gangstar: Miami Vindication, the game sees you continuing the life of a street criminal, and taking various missions for local crime syndicates and gangs. The first game concentrated on jacking cars, but Miami Vindication includes the ability to take to the road on motorbikes, as well as to the skies in a helicopter.

Visually, the game looks to have gone for an intentionally low polygonal look and feel, right down to the pre-rendered cut scenes. No doubt this allows for both a larger area to render on the iDevices as well as giving a consistent look and feel throughout the game. I actually prefer this than trying to push the device too hard with realism, and the game stuttering as a result. It’s all about exploring the large open areas afterall!

We’ll be getting hand-on with the game soon, and stay tuned for more info it breaks.

Also, there is something interesting to notice. GameLoft said

“Excited about @Gangstar_game reveal tomorrow. Even designated Gangstar names. Mine’s “Trigger Happy.” What would be YOUR Gangstar alias?” in another tweet.

Which makes me wonder: What if it is an MMO? Sounds like it could be…Now THAT would be awesome…

  • http://ontheedgeapps.com Austin

Yes, it would be awesome if it was an MMO, but I highly doubt it. Also, where did you find that artwork Nigel? I was wondering if you made it in Photoshop or you got it from somewhere else???? Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s top down. They are definitely known for being big time cloners. I guess well just have to wait and see if it’s like GTA. But then again, GTA is already an awesome game, why would they need to copy it when it’s already an awesome game on the iPhone. We could really use a good 3D gangster game on the App Store. So far, I haven’t found any, sigh…

If I’m not mistaken Gangstar 2: Kings of LA was an existing mobile game and Gangstar: West Coast Hustle was actually a 3D version of that game for iPhone since they share the same location and Pedro main character. I don’t think the DSi version reverting to the top down format of Kings of LA has much indication on iPhone’s new Gangstar.

I hope Gameloft is focusing on the little details that make these open world sandbox games feel real like pedestrians that appear to have their own lives and objectives, day/night and weather effects, radio stations with commentators that react to the outcome of your missions, and plenty of optional mini-games and side missions. I wonder if they’ll be supporting older devices, because requiring OpenGL ES 2.0 and 256MB of RAM would definitely given them more freedom in building a large living world. I’m guessing tomorrow’s announcement will at best include a teaser/intro trailer that is pre-rendered and won’t actually give much insight into how the in-game will look and play.

    @Austin – yep photoshop ;)

  • http://ontheedgeapps.com Austin

    Photoshop eh? Good job then;)

  • http://ontheedgeapps.com Austin

Truthfully, it doesn’t look too impressive, sigh…

  • Nigel Wood, UK

From a visual standpoint maybe. But it sure looks fun… no?

  • http://ontheedgeapps.com Austin

    Yes, it does look fun.

  • LBG

Another thing to keep in mind is that this footage was taken from an Alpha build of the game. It’s likely that the graphics will be improved further along the line before it’s released.

  • Nigel Wood

I don’t think it will improve significantly in the graphics department LBG

  • Austin

I agree with Nigel. When Gameloft gives us a preview, they stick with it, they almost never change it around. What they show is what it is.

looks nice, of course.. vice city..

what did you expect in the graphics department, its on a phone, i like it, and im sure it will be fun, and sell good, thank god for no perspective changes.

Nigel, you did NOT photoshop that image – it’s simply a cut-out from the trailer. I’ve seen it used everywhere. Haha. :P .

Anywho, the game looks amazing and can’t wait till you guys get hands-on. When would that be?

    Best,
    John.

  • Nigel Wood, UK

Yes I did, but not this image, the image has changed since then… the original one was photoshoped, then I changed it once the trailer hit the internet. this was it here http://www.touchgen.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/gangtar21.jpg

  • John Grubber

Ah, well nice photoshopping man! Adore the look of touchGen and the art. :) .

Would you mind telling us fans when about you would be getting hands-on with Gangstar: Miami Vindication? So excited, and love your hands-on articles here. :D .

  • Nico

I really can’t wait for the hands on. When will it dome. It’s been a month.

  • Nico

The game is coming next week.

  • Nico

I don’t think you are getting your hands on. The game comes out the day after tomorrow.

  • Nigel Wood

You might be right there. I was promised an early hands-on (like I’ve had with the previous game) but gameloft didn’t get a build together in time.

  • Nico

Did you see the new trailer though? Aligators you can beat to death in the swamps. It’s written by the writer of the wire. And there is a flamethrower. But you haven’t even played it yet? It comes the day after tomorrow

  • Nigel Wood, UK

Look out for our review… but I doubt that won’t stop you buying it right away ;)

  • Nico

I expect the game to get a high score. It looks like the best sandbox game by the trailer but they all look good when you first see them.

I am already 95% done with the game. It was pretty easy. Took me about 6 hours total.
