Game saves available through iTunes file sharing

I noticed today that Broken Sword allows it’s game saves to be exported and imported using the file sharing feature in iTunes…

A huge niggle in the current set up on iPhone and iPod Touch is the in-abililty to store your game saves for games, should you a) delete the game from the device and iTunes, or b) install the game on a new device. With Broken Sword HD for iPad though, much like sharing files using Apple’s Pages App or similar productivity Apps, you can access the save files, export them to disk and add new files and sync back to iPad. This opens up the possibility of sharing game saves online, should you get stuck and want to see a later level you cannot reach.

With Apple’s Game Centre coming soon to all devices, which will probably offer this ability, it may be unnecessary… but it would be good to see if other games developers make use of it.

UPDATE: Charles Cecil (Director of Broken Sword) has just confirmed to me that sharing game saves is indeed possible, but that the feature is enabled in Broken Sword primarily for people to load up foreign language speech. With the objective being to allow people to play the game with text / speech in any language combination.

Great news. Sadly as there is no such function for the iPhone yet I can’t transfer my Broken Sword saves to the iPad version. Thankfully the game is so good I don’t mind replaying it from the start with juiced up graphics.

It will be interesting to see if Apple’s Game Center play’s nice with Open Feint or if it will just end up killing it.
