E3: Galaga 30th Anniversary Impressions

Galaga 30th Anniversary for iOS celebrates 30 years of Namco’s unabashed desire to sell you its old properties on new devices. The game is what you imagine, a re-release of the classic game that sports mildly updated graphics. This isn’t the neon fever dream that was Galaga Legions. 30th Anniversary is set to include three of these reborn titles: Galaga “classic,” Gaplus, and Galaga 88 – the latter two being avaiable via in-app purchasing. We were only able to play classic on the show floor.

Galaga controls well, replicating the arcade controls on the bottom of the touch screen. There is also an autofire mode included, though that wasn’t shown during our hands-on. While the title is universal, the iPad version has an unbecoming black border around the entire game, similar to what was found in Space Invaders: Infinity Gene.

Look forward to a full release later this year.
