Flower Garden blooms on the App Store

The first ever MOFGG?!

While shmoozing with Jason Citron at the ngmoco party at GDC, I met Noel from the one-men developer, Snappy Touch. This excited gentlemen wasted no time in showing off an impressive game/app that involves growing and tending flowers on your iPhone. Yes, I know that sounds silly, but bare with me here.

The game looked absolutely fantastic. I mean, really really good. The concept is simple enough: plant seeds in a pot, water them, and watch them grow into flowers. You unlock new types of flowers as you go along, some of which will grow immediately, and others that take days of tending. When you have flowers in bloom, you can cut various flowers and combine them to make a boquet that you can send to that special someone.

Obviously, this is a casual experience for the iPhone. However, Noel mentioned his future aspirations for Flower Garden, and they go quite beyond the “grow/cut/send” gameplay of the current version. Eventually, he will be adding in the ability to cross polinate between other Flower Garden users to create completely new breeds of flowers. In other words, a massively online flower growing game! (MOFGG?!) He also mentioned the future ability to actually grow flowers into messages for the recipient. So you could create a flower seed with a message that you can send to someone. As they tend to the seeds, they will grow into a flowery message for that person.

While this kind of app may not be for everyone, it certainly caught my eye. I’ll be the first to say that I’m no green thumb, but as soon as I get the redemption code working, I’ll check this one out and let you guys know what I think on our next podcast. Enjoy many screens below.
