First Look: Deer Hunter 3D

This is no iHunt, kiddies. Read on for two exclusive videos!

When I sat down with Glu and they mentioned that the title I would be previewing was called “Deer Hunter 3D”, I’ll be honest that I was a little worried. We’ve seen our fair amount of crappy hunting games on the iPhone, being lead by the ever stinky “iHunt” series. However, after only a few minutes with Deer Hunter 3D, I can tell you that it’s looking to be the richest and most in-depth hunting experience on the iPhone to date!

Considering the game should be out tomorrow, and we’ll be posting a review for it soon after, I’m not going to too in depth with details. Lets get the first thing out of the way… this game looks GOOD. As you will see from screenshot_3the two videos we posted, the animals look fantastic, and animate extremely realisticly based on the situation. The environments are also simply gorgeous. There are 3 total locales, each containing 9 different hunting views.

The gameplay consists of first searching for game on the mini map. There is a meter that goes from dawn to dusk, which is your time limit to hunt a certain amount of game to achieve a high score. You use a circle on the map to locate where animals are lurking, then go into hunting mode to track and kill them. The game uses a great system that lets you tap an animal to size it up and track it, or zoom in (or not) to attempt to kill the animal. Based on where you shoot it, it will behave very naturally. Many times I simply took too long, and they notice you and leap away.

Aside from the impressive visuals and slick gameplay, there is a ton to do with Deer Hunter 3D. You can upgrade and unlock various equipment and weapons, uncluding an AK47! Can you say overkill? In a surprising RPG element, you also gain points to upgrade your hunting skills. Things like accuracy and agility screenshot_5play an important role in completing hunting trips. Finally, one of my favorite aspects of the game is the trophy toom. This lets you see your best kills by viewing stats and a 3D version of the animal and kill shot. You can see exactly where you shot the animal, as well as the terran you shot it in. A little thing, but pretty dang cool.

There’s more to this game that I haven’t mentioned yet, but you will have to wait for the reivew. I can tell you that Deer Hunter 3D doesn’t just look “good for a hunting game.” It holds in own. If it’s enjoying for a noob like me who has never been hunting, it will be mind blowing for those who have been holding onto iHunt to hold them over for a GOOD iPhone hunting game.

WARNING: Don’t watch if you don’t want to see animated digital animal deaths. (no blood)
