E3: Zombie wonderland – iPad hands-on

Today we got hands-on with Zombie wonderland for iPhone and iPad.

The game came out for iPhone last week but an iPad version shoal hit the AppStore in a week or so. The developer, Alex Bortoluzzi from Xoobis, created the game with the iPhone in mind, citing the games graphics and style being akin to miniature models, but was surprised how well it all looked razzed up on the iPad screen. While the game is identical apart from the HD graphics, it actually plays slightly differently from a user perspective. Instead of a more frantic thumb control experience, on iPad you play more using your hands and fingers, as you direct Chuck the zombie cleaner around the levels to shoot, clean and fix windows.

For those of you who haven’t seen details of the game. Zombie Wonderland is a mix mini gore style shooter, with time management, as well as some tower defence elements. As a zombie cleaner it is your job to rid the level, in this case a room in a house, of approaching zombies. You simply tap at a zombie and chuck will move to the window and shoot. Should a zombie get into the house and you kill him, you will then need to tap on the oozing mess left by the dead zombie and activate the broom or other cleaning implement to clean up the mess. Fixing the broken windows a-la Call of Duty, slows the zombie progress. This is done by running to a window and frantically tapping the hammer button to put up wooden planks. You can also drop down a machine gun emplacement, which will auto shoot any oncoming zombies. Again this can be damaged and will need fixing from time to time. As you can imagine later levels become crazy sessions of frantic shooting, cleaning and fixing.

Enemies in the a game are varied. There are the Greenies, which are your common garden variety, then there are Flamies, which as you can imagine are fast flaming Zombies! Meanies are large Zombies which can wall slam your house and break the wooden planks… and the worst is a Grannie zombie. These remain outside and scream at you, shattering the windows.

Each session is based on a night shift, with a timer alerting yo to the end of your shift. Once complete then it’s onto the next. There are five nights per level, offering 20 levels in all. Alex doesn’t want to stop there though, and promises a ton of creative ways to extend the game, through both free and paid content. Including a Sandbox style option, mini games, new adventures and more challenge based crystal implementation. One addition that I’m excited for is a level based on the Grannies, where you have to cleanup a Nail Salon, as a ton of angry Grannie Zombies attack you.

Look for the iPad version soon from Chillingo for the same price of $1.99 ($0.99 limited time)
