E3: Tron First Look

Today we got the chance to hang out with the fine folks at Disney and check out Tron on iPhone for the first time. Our anticipation for Tron was high, since the original from the 1980′s was regarded as one of the best games of its time.

Tron as iPhone as it stands, is a top down shooter where you play as the Tank. It’s pretty crazy looking visually with lots of colors and bright explosions happening all around you. Tron features a 2.5d visual style. This means that even though the view of game world is top down, the items in the world have a real sense of depth. Even though it is not 100 percent complete, it looks very impressive from a visual stand point, and when it’s all finalized I’m sure it will look even better.

There is a single player mode that features 15 different levels. The levels get progressively harder as you progress though the game. The control method for the tank game is that of a twin stick shooter, so if you are familiar with Geometry wars, then you will understand how Tron controls. Playing though the levels uses a mixture of stealth and speed, so you better bring your A game, because in the later levels you are going to need to use a lot of both.

There will be multiplayer in Tron as well. They plan to feature 3g, Wifi and Bluetooth play, so no matter where your friends are, they will have a way to connect to you. Speaking of online, they made it point to mention that Tron uses a different online system then Split Second, which is great, because the multiplayer system in that game was less then stellar.

As I mentioned before, Tron launches with the Tank game, but there will be free updates leading to the movies release that will contain other game modes and cool toys related to Tron. It looks like Disney is hoping to make Tron into more of a platform than just a game.

Tron is due out in July, along with an update for Split Second, which promises more cars and game play tweaks. Keep it locked to TouchGen for a review when the game becomes available.
