E3: Street Fighter IV: Volt First Look [video]

Yearning for more Street Fighter on the go. You got it!

Capcom is known for creating numerous revisions of their popular fighting games, and it looks there is no exception for iOS mobile devices. For consoles, Capcom released the highly acclaimed Street Fighter IV title, which is promptly followed up with Super Street Fighter IV – a game that contained a huge amount of new characters, stages, and other features. Street Fighter IV: Volt essentially does the same thing (on a smaller scale) for Street Fighter IV on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Volt adds new characters to the fray: Cody, Vega, and Balrog, which makes for eighteen in total. Personally, I’m a big fan of Cody’s nonchalant fighting, but I have friends that somehow make Vega work for them (I have no idea how). There are also a couple new maps thrown in for good measure. As for gameplay, I was told that Volt was “rebuilt” from the ground up to even further tighten the controls and improve the gameplay. This is pretty impressive considering how good the original game was.

barlog_02The biggest new feature that Volt has to offer is it’s new online matchmaking system. Via WiFi, you can link up fans from all over the world to test your screen mashing skills. You will be able to fully customize the matchmaking experience, which is key to not getting paired up with someone playing with auto-block, special assist, etc enabled. (Or perhaps you’re a noob, and want to play with that on!) Finally, with the new internet-enabled play, you can put your game into an open arcade mode, which allows anyone online to challenge you at any time while you’re playing in single player. This was a cool feature of the console versions, and simulates the arcade cabinet experience, where anyone can walk up with a quarter and challenge you.

Street Fighter IV: Volt will be released as a standalone game sometime in July. We weren’t given a price point yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you up to date if anything develops. Until then, enjoy a video of me getting my ass handed to me by Ken below! (Note to Pat: SHUTUP.)

If Capcom wants me to buy Street Fighter 4 all over again (for my iphone), they needed to add more than just four new characters and wifi. Street Fighter 4 vanilla already has 14 characters, this new Volt version needed to have at least 20 characters in order to get me interested.

man, you said Vega, Balrog and Cody… and there are 14 characters in Street Fighter 4 that is a total of 17… not 18. you missed the Mistery character that is probably going to be Akuma.

Looks like the same thing with a couple of updates. The graphics and presentation are as crappy as ever. Capcom loves milking their fans, and on iOS it’s especially atrocious.

Probably still gonna buy though. I’m a SF junkie :(

Good point. They didn’t mention a hidden character to us, but I’m assuming that would be the 18th character in the game.
