E3: Space Tripper Hands-on

Today at E3 we got hands-on with Space Tripper, a port of PomPom’s Astro Tripper for PS3…

True Axis of Jet Car Stunts fame are working on the port and should have the game ready for release in around a month’s time. One of the challenges in bringing the PS3 original to the iPhone was the amount of enemies on screen, coupled with the advanced 3D graphics and getting it all to run for an intense but smooth experience. I’m happy to repot that it runs like a dream and looks fantastic.

The game is a top down shooter where you pilot a space craft around themed arenas, as you aim to rid them of all enemies before the time runs out. Controlling the craft is done via accelerometer. And allows you to move quickly and accurately around the game area. A tap on the right of the screen will flip your craft horizontally, and a tap on the left switches weapons. They are looking at virtual d-pad controls for those who wish it, but the tilt action works great and allows you to enjoy the great visuals without your fingers and thumbs getting in the way.

The game takes place across 14 levels through 4 different themed worlds; hologram style, industrial, alien and aztec.

When quizzed on the storyline for the game True Axis simply replied “to shoot the crap out of everything that moves!”

Look out for it next month for $3.99. You can check out the video of the game in action below:

Actually “Space Tripper” was the original name for this game, which was developed/released for PC/Mac platforms in 2001/2002. The “astro” bit came much later. :)
