A 17 year old one-man developer shows us an alpha build of his game.
If there’s one thing I love about the iPhone gaming community, it’s seeing young amateur game developers create quality games. Josh is one of these developers. At only 17, he showed up at our iPhone mixer last night and impressed quite a few of us with his Star Fox-esque jet fighting game. Bare in mind that we saw the first public build of the game, so everything is Alpha.
In bare bones, Sci Fly 2 looks like a cross between the original Star Fox and the recent “Glyder” game from Glu. The concept of the game revolves around taking control of various islands by destroying their protecting forces. You can fly between islands in real time, so you technically never have to jump out of the action to go from one fight to the next. You can jump to islands you have control over at any moment though. The developer mentioned hoping to have 100 islands to defeat in the final version of the game.
Sci Fly 2 made good use of the accelerometer for controls, and felt pretty smooth overall. The environment and enemy modeling was not mind-blowing, but it certainly looked solid. Your ship makes good use of specular lighting effects to give that nice Ferrari finish look. The game also features a pretty deep customization screen that allows you to upgrade things like weapons, shields, etc for your ship.
All around Sci Fly 2 looks promising, and we’re going to be following this one. You can visit www.SciFly2.com for any new details.

Reminds me of a Recent MMO that has been bounced around from company to company that I think is currently called “Space Cowboy Online”… Not trying to knock it, I can’t wait for this game! I’ve been waiting for someone to take that concept and put it on the iPhone.
