E3: Robocalypse [updated with video]

Today at E3 we got the chance to sit down with Vogster Entertainment’s Robocalypse, which is a really cool real time strategy game that was originally on the Nintendo DS, and is now coming to play on our beloved iPhones. We reveived a brief demo from one of the games designers, and we were impressed.

The story behind the game is that a factory that makes robots and appliances had some kind of accident that caused these evil red robots to be created. Your job is to stop these bad robots and restore order to the world. This is accomplished over a variety of different mission types. In total there are 17 playable missions in the game ranging from escort missions to capturing control points, all the standard RTS staples. All these missions should equal out the quite a few hours of gameplay.

The visuals in the game looked very good, and the sounds seemed pretty good. One of the major problems with E3 is that it is really hard to tell how a game sounds with all the hustle and bustle around you, but what I was able to hear was good. The DS version of the game used Midi sounds, but everything has been redone for the iPhone with much higher queality MP3′s. The resolution of the grpahics has also been upped substantially for the much better iPhone screen.

The UI has also been completely rethought since the games first appearance on the DS. You can play the game either horizontally or vertically, depending on your gaming tastes. To select a unit you simply tap him and then tap where you want him to travel, or what you would like him to attack.

What would an RTS be without multiplayer? Well fear not, because there will be multiplay over Edge, 3g and Wifi, so no matter what type of connection you have, you will be able to get in the game battle it out with your robot friends.

Overall, this game looks very promising, and I can’t wait to play the final version in August when it hits the app store. Check out the video of the game from the show floor below:

It was pretty good on the DS. If they have improved some of it then it could be even better.
