Gameloft shows off an impressive new tennis game, but will it control well enough?
I just got done playing Real Tennis by Gameloft, and I can tell you that it looks fantastic. The game is much more detailed than previous tennis games on the iPhone, with very fluid movements and animations. The game features 7 different stadiums with 3 different play fields (clay, grass, and synthetic), all modeled after real arenas. The type of field will actually impact gameplay.
Unlock othe tennis games where you player hits the ball automatically when you come near it, Real Tennis requires you to actually move and swing your raquet independantly. I played the game using the classic Gameloft on-screen joy stick, and I found that even on easy it was difficult to return the ball. The joystick didn’t quite feel responsive enough to be able to react quickly. I’m not sure if it was already build in, but an option to tap to move might work a little better
The game features a career mode, as well as wifi multiplayer. There are 8 characters to play as, all with different strengths and weaknesses. All around this is another impressive title from Gameloft. I will need more time with the game to decide if the controls really need tweaking, or if I just hadn’t gotten used to them.
