Today the iPGN crew had to chance to sit with the fine folks at Red Rocket games to check out MEVO, which is an awesome music based platformer. The idea of the game is to move your little alien guy across the level by tapping the on screen arrows in time with the beat.
There is an evil alien who hates music and he is trying to bring silence all over the world, and your job is to fight the silence by navigating levels while make beautiful music. I mean beautiful music literally, because the music in the game amazing, I would even venture to say that it is the best music in any game I have played on the iPhone. This is a game where headphones are truly needed to get the full experience. All of the music is original and developed in house, for now at least. At some point Red Rocket is hoping to sign some commercial bands to come in and add some of their music, and they plan to build custom levels around these songs.
To start with, there will be 3 levels, each with 3 difficulties. Every 2 to 3 weeks they plan to roll out another pack of levels, which will bring the grand to total to 15. The game is going to be only $.99, and with 15 levels, it’s a steal. There are also a number of powerups in the levels to enhance the play experience and give the game a little extra flare. All of these updates will be free, except for the possible commercial artist ones, which they hope to charge for after the 3.0 update.
Speaking of the powerups, these are unlocked with in game currency called “the funk.” You will earn this throughout the levels, spend it in the in game store to unlock tons of cool stuff. It’s not only used for powerups though, you will also be able to purchase new characters, which are some of the cutest little aliens I’ve seen.
The game also looks very good. The graphics are nicely rendered, and the art style is beautiful. It has a sort of 3d cell shaded look to it, that I really enjoyed.
Going into this demo I had no idea what to expect, but after playing the game and listening to music I came out very impressed, and now I can’t wait until the game hits the app store in the next couple of weeks.
Check out a free download of the games theme song, so you can see for yourself how great the music is. Click here to download it! Who hooks you up? iPGN that’s who!
