E3: FingerSpace iPad

During our session with Bulkypix we were shown a tentatively named title, FingerSpace. Consisting of tactical, turn-based, and multiplayer space action, FingerSpace looks to be a promising addition to the iPad library.

FingerSpace seems to be the kind of game a kid would make up. Not because the game appears childish, but because its premise and rules carry the same logic of the epic space battles played out in legos and action figures in the mind of every young aspiring space commander. On either side of the screen lies a player base, colored red or blue. The object of the game is to create and maneuver ships in a turn based fashion with the goal of destroying the enemy base. Ships are moved with a flick of the finger, and the turrets fixed on each base are fired in a similar fashion. The build we saw included five different ship types, each with its own ability. One ship turned invisible after moving, another had the ability to move twice in one turn, and a third was a heavily armored variant of the base ship type. Players can plant bombs on a base if a ship is fortunate to reach the other side of the map.

In our play session, the game was only playable in single player against the AI, but Bulkypix CEO and Co-founder Olivier Pierre confirmed that the final build of the game will include two player multiplayer, playable on the same iPad screen.

FingerSpace seems to take the best aspects of highly strategic space strategy games such as Flotilla and condense them into a brisk multiplayer experience. Taking turns means that friends have time to talk trash at their opponents, and also that the iPad won’t turn into the centerpiece of an expensive game of tug-of-war. I am excited to see a more final build of FingerSpace in the future, and you can look forward to Touchgen covering the game closer to its planned July release.
