Coloud Brand Headphones review

Coloud is all about identity, branding and style. They come cheap, and the idea is that you buy several right away. Marvel, Star Wars, Hello Kitty, Fame and NHL are the current high end brands that have their logos, characters and colours on Coloud headphones. I am currently using the Hello Kitty Red Nice! design, and it actually makes me happy. Red headphones with the popular Kitty all over the ear cups, and a bright yellow cord extending down to my iPhone. At home I have a set of Rebel Alliance Star Wars headphones. Those make me feel a bit like Luke Skywalker in his X-Wing heading for the core of the Death Star. I might be a bit too imaginative as a person, but playing Trench Run using these is really exciting.

img_1417The Coloud headphones come packaged in bright, highly branded boxes showing the headphone clearly. From that first look it is easy to be impressed by the well made print works. After several weeks of usage there is still no blemishes to the colour, and no damages to the prints.

The headphones are quite comfortable, and as they are adjustable even my large noggin can wear some cool Hello Kitty headphones. They get warm after about ten minutes of usage, but that is a common problem with most on ear headphones.

The materials used looks cool, bright and durable. They are rather cheap to the touch though. These are made to look cool, and to be used as an accessory. Just like a piece of jewelry, a baseball cap or a team jersey these headphones are meant to show the world who you are, and what you like. As such they work wonders, and I have gotten noticed using Hello Kitty headphones at work. My students know that I test things so I am pardoned, but I really like them in secret.

1717_db30d10170The sound of the Twelve that the headphone design is called is really good. I have not had any sound source sounding bad or weak. If I were to complain it is that the bass feels slightly off. A bit like when you press a bass boost button on a Sony device. It is strong bass, but somehow it feels like it is being forced through too weak speakers. For everyday use the Coloud works really well, but for those wanting to really enjoy music it is a bit thin. But as I stated earlier these headphones are more about style and wear ability than pure classical music enjoyment.

1724_4a320514f7Coloud uses a triangular plug for their headphones, as a part of the branding. Sadly this plug doesn’t work with a lot of cases for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Almost all cases in my collection have problems with this plug, and only the Otterbox Commuter and Otterbox Impact works flawlessly. I hope that Coloud rethinks this plug, and add some other distinguishing property rather than one that limits the usage of the headphones.

The cord is rather short and rigid, and the coiled design makes it feel even shorter. The cord is not prone to tangle, but as it is coiled it already feels like an entanglement in the process. The tight coil next to the left earcup can be extended, but I am concerned that I might accidentally pull it out of the headphones. This would not be a good thing at all, as the cord is not supposed to detach. There is very little noise transferred from the cord rubbing against clothes.

Worth noting is that the headphones aren’t collapsable at all. 1697_9d6b1b88afThe only way to make them smaller, and more portable is to adjust the headband.

The Coloud line of branded headphones is a brilliant idea. Affordable, but still highly usable headphones giving good sound. If you use a case for your iDevice you have to take caution as the triangular plug requires quite a lot of room to be inserted. Other than that I can really recommend these to anyone looking to add some colour and style to their persona. They make great presents for anyone into the brands available.
