for gaming I think it will be a nice to have, and won’t be as much as a big deal for gaming as the current iPod Touch and iPhone.
TouchGen
So that’s it… To be honest that’s what I thought it would be… and it’s what I want as much for my full time job as a designer, as for gaming…
TouchGen
I still wanna know how hot that thing will get!
Probably not that hot — he said it was a single chip device. Lots of area to disperse that heat. - 148Apps
Hey, it’s magical. It won’t even use electricity, but fairy dust. - ThePortableGamer
fairy dust that Steve manufactures, of course. - ThePortableGamer
148Apps
Ok — so pending the possible “One More Thing” that’s it for the iPad — what are your thoughts?
we’re hoping, but not holding our breath - ThePortableGamer

What does it cost / when can we get it? Any guesses now, before Steve tells us?
My guess: base price of 5 hundy, April. - Lyndon Perry
But thankfully FF will allow me to edit that comment, so my guess may change. - Lyndon Perry
$29 for unlimited data!!! - Chris H
Nice Lyndon! No witnesses to your guess either! ;) - Melody
TouchGen
Price is: not $999… it’s $499
148Apps
Big question now — pricing. We now know there are multiple models from 16GB - 64GB. Probably at least 3 models. Will they be subsidized by cell phone carriers - I do not see a cell carrier logo at the top of the screen in the screen shots.
Corrected — iPad will also be available with 3G - 148Apps
Yup, $499.. I’m buying one. - Chris H
ThePortableGamer
Data plan pricing…Drum roll
omg 250 mb is nothing - it’s another $30 a month. - ThePortableGamer

So, as we thought.. it’s all about the Apps/Games. Hardware-wise there are no huge surprises.. no natal like motion controls!
disappointed cuz i thought some sort of proximity sensor would be included…so far…underwhelming - brainno722 (Peter)
Proximity sensors are for the 2nd gen. - Marbru
Besides, the motion control patients are all wrapped up with Sony, Nintendo and M$, at least for stuff thats shipping - Marbru

iWork coming to the iPad!
Pages, Keynote, and Numbers - 148Apps

Wow — that bookshelf look familiar. Is this based on Classics? - 148Apps
PDF was mentioned earlier — not sure if it will work in iBooks or not though - 148Apps
ThePortableGamer
Now we get to some of the missing meat: what this can do that a laptop can do. iPhone can’t run iWork.
Or WoW. I want to run Molten Core on the iPad - Marbru

Hello, starving comic book artist? Come buy one of these babies.

That’s it for the app demos. They all looked decent, but very safe and not really something we’ve never seen. Now Apple showing their ebook reader. App called iBooks.

EA showing Need for Speed
Need for Speed Shift, BTW. Looks very good. Question is, what will the controls be like. Will they be touch or tilt? The iPad has accelerometer built in. - 148Apps
I’d still rather see Real Racing - 148Apps
148Apps
Now showing MLB for the iPad — looks like a killer app for the baseball fan. Stats and live video. Box score, etc. A good use for the extra screen space.

I love that I got a nook on Saturday. Really love it.
Way to brag. Sheesh. Some of us don’t have one yet. ;) - Melody
TouchGen
The lack of flash could be a problem… especially for page turning style online magazines.
doesn’t html5 cover that? - ThePortableGamer
We won’t see flash on this or the iPhone. With HTML5 it’s not needed. Not to mention it’s insecure and horribly maintained by Adobe. (Macromedia was better) - 148Apps
ThePortableGamer
OK, Steve. Could you just kill the Kindle/nook already? Sheesh.
ThePortableGamer
What do you all think that little keyboard button means? bluetooth? I hope so.

Can anyone see how he is typing on this? Is he thumbing or one-handing it? I would think angled on your lap would be at an inconvenient angle.

So far, I hope, he is covering the basics for the traditional media. The transformers part will be later. “One more thing, its a Decepticon! iPad transform!” - Marbru

please tell me those tiny icons are a joke - Diego Petrucci
No Flash - you must be kidding! - Arnaud Fischer
ThePortableGamer
Apparently, Steve thinks this is more capable than a smartphone. Like the…iPhone? Kinda hedging his bets, I think
I still think they don’t really need it between the laptop and iPhone, but I’ll still get one! -
ThePortableGamer
Seriously - this needs to go on “Stuff White People Like”
apple-tablet-keynote_051.jpg
Mark H
Pretty interesting how quickly they got down to business, not like the 3GS event where they spent ages on other, comparatively minor, launches.
yeah, I thought he was gonna mess with us for a while…”but before THAT…” - ThePortableGamer
TouchGen
And here it is

I couldn’t be more confused with what one would do with a tablet. I can’t see how it would fit into my life at all, I have an iPod, an ultraportable laptop, and a desktop (along with the ds and psp, one of which I usually carry). If I want to read a book, I carry a book. I can’t see this potential product as a replacement for any of my current game devices, nor can I see it tagging along in my bag (I would be much too anxious about scratching the screen).

That is why I primarily carry my DS and laptop in my bag, clamshell designs alleviate most screen scratching worries.

Well Nathan, I have the same set-up as you, but my laptop gets used in our couch most of the time (by me and my GF), and if Steve gives me a better device to trade that with, and can get all the daily, weekly and monthly magazines out of my house… AND give me an extra system that boasts some great games (I have a PSP which I never play, and a DS which is Layton and Spirit Tracks only), then I want it.

And knowing Apple, they’ll throw in a bunch of extra stuff we never thought about, and are eager to use. So bring on 6PM!

Stop Sven, I am trying to convince myself that I won’t buy it before I see it. :)

Wait, scratch that. Only way I am getting this is if is given to me for free. It looks so…. useless.

Unless of course there is a way to use a stylus so that I could take engineering notes and export them as a pdf or something, then…. yeah then I would do it.

  5. LJ on Wed, 27th Jan 2010 9:07 pm

No flash support - NO WAY WILL I BUY THIS!

  6. Nigel Wood, UK on Wed, 27th Jan 2010 9:08 pm

Apple, will need to nip that in teh bud and get Adobe onboard with flash.

I wonder if there will be a way to tether an iPhone to the iPad, so as to use the 3G coverage capability of the iPhone for the iPad?

Having said that, I’ve still no idea why I’d actually want an iPad. It doesn’t really seem to fill any “need” I have.

I dunno why so many people are so skeptical of this device. It is a big iPod touch with 3G capabilities, and nice screen. If iPod touch can in many ways replace the basic services of a laptop, how would a big version of it fall under the category “useless”? I mean we’re talking a device that potentially replaces all of the school related items (yay for textbooks on iBooks or in ePub), magazines, newspapers, has a browser and gps, and acts as a typewriter and agenda, and also provides a genius platform for games (hell, if anyone was smart enough they would release a bluetooth version of Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic on it, and hooked up to in-game card buy/trade stores and shit, man that would sell for any kid; now take a breath and imagine a new civilization on it).

One word. Porn. Notsaying I’m gonna use it for that, but it’s the elephant in the room. Porn is a bigger industry then hollywood.
