The best defense is a good offense…
… or at least that’s Chillingo’s view in their new game, Anomaly Warzone Earth. I got a quick hands on of this new spin on the old tower defense games. With a radical new form of gameplay, I was quickly hooked.
In Anomaly, you take control of our planet’s soldiers in an attempt to fight back the invading alien army. Instead of sitting in your base and building towers, waiting for E.T. to come knocking on your door, this game puts you on the offensive. Players navigate throughout a map in whatever path they choose, moving forces through enemy bases. While navigating the map, your units will automatically attack nearby towers and units. Besides choosing which path to take on the fly, the game allows you to collect and use several power ups, such as unit repairs and smokescreens, and activate them in an attempt to aid your attacking force. The controls are all simple one touch, and the gameplay is incredibly intuitive – without sacrificing the need for strategy.
Although developers swore the game needed to be “polished,” the version of Anomaly I played looked incredible. The shadows and dynamic lighting were beautiful, as rays of light reflected off metallic surfaces. Even simple effects such as explosions, muzzle flashes, and smokescreens looked great as I plowed through enemy alien scum.
But don’t take my word for it. Check out the screenshots for both iPad and iPhone versions, and watch the video of some early gameplay. Anomaly Warzone Earth comes out later this summer – make sure to watch for it!
