Altec Lansing Muzx® Core review

The third set of headphones I try from Altec Lansing is the basic microphone equipped model aptly named Core. It is basically a stripped version compared to the Ultra and Extra with cheaper materials used. The sound is still quite good, and the noise isolation is on par with the more expensive models. If you can accept living without the volume controls these are a good alternative at less than $30.

It is a semi rigid plastic cord that I often associate with cheaper products. It is heavy, and transfer a small amount of noise when rubbing against clothes. The next sign of a budget model is the fact that the silicone tips are thin, and quite uncomfortable after long sessions. To me they become itchy, and I want to yank them out after about ten minutes. If I resist the urge to pull I can have them inserted another hour or so before removing them.

The sound is clear, and the bass is decent. Compared to bass heavy headphones these do not fare well if bass is what you crave. To me bass needs to be felt without affecting the music too much. The Core lacks punch, and is better suited for balanced sources such as rock, metal and jazz.

With a microphone next to the mouth you get good sound, and excellent handsfree functionality. To me the lack of volume controls is an issue, but considering the price you can’t get everything.

The Core is a good replacement headset when you are on a strict budget. If you are looking for cheap headphones that makes your music pop and stir these are not a good choice. Finding headphones that elevates the experience above the stock Apple headphones is near impossible below $30. The Core looks great, and works well enough to be a contender in the rather thin budget segment when it comes to knowledgeable brands.
